MO’S MISSION

Young Mo’s on a mission to learn to read, but as he’s struggling to make sense of squiggles on the pages, he’s startled to hear, “PSST! Feed me, I can help”. Mo meets THINKAMADOO, his brain, hungry for WORDS people TALK, READ, and SING, teasing “The more you feed, the sooner you’ll read. It’s my recipe – Feed to Read.” As Mom and Mo shop for ingredients for Grammie’s birthday cake, Mo learns how to feed Thinkamadoo and discovers he’s been learning to read all along…mission in motion.  Backmatter includes tips for parents to nurture the learning.

MO’S MISSION presents out-of-the-box learning opportunities, like Ellie Peterson’s SCHOOL IS WHEREVER I AM, and shows how reading can be empowering, as in Irma Simonton Black/Seymour Fleischman’s THE LITTLE OLD MAN WHO COULD NOT READ, a beloved humorous classic revisited in 2024. MO’S MISSION is unique with simple building blocks of literacy organically woven throughout the plot, giving a blueprint in recipe form for reading.  This blueprint could address the problem of “almost 60 percent of children in the United States starting kindergarten unprepared”.  (https://www.clintonfoundation.org/programs/education-health-equity/too-small-fail#about/
